About James Clynes
Democrat James Clynes is running for Civil Court Judge to give New Yorkers the fair and compassionate justice they deserve. James has dedicated his life to fighting for justice, improving our legal system, and helping those in need. As our Civil Court Judge, James will dispense justice with fairness, integrity and compassion.
Public service has always been James’ calling. He is currently Court Attorney in the New York State Supreme Court, a position he has held for the last five years, where he drafts decisions and handles complex cases. In addition to the New York State Supreme Court, James’ trial experience spans the New York City Civil Court and New York City Criminal Court.
Prior to his senior positions in the New York State Court System, James served as an Assistant District Attorney and Chief of the Civil Forfeiture Unit of the Rackets Bureau in Nassau County, prosecuting felony cases. In the District Attorney’s Office, James mastered criminal law and procedure, rules of evidence, and trial skills.
James also spent years in the private sector, practicing civil and commercial litigation on behalf of a wide array of industries in diverse subject areas. His more than 25 years of experience practicing law has prepared him immensely for serving as our next Civil Court Judge.
James is currently Chair of Manhattan Community Board 8. James’ service on Manhattan Community Board 8 spans eleven years, where he has worked on issues to improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. Whether it was fighting to enhance mass transit options for residents, increase public park space, help small businesses burdened by regulations, or work with our first responders to improve public safety, James was always a vocal leader who got results.
James serves on the Board of Directors of the East Midtown Partnership and is a member of the New York County Lawyers Association. He is a graduate of Villanova University and the University of Notre Dame Law School.
